CM0046. QSA / KSA PAIR - 1518 TE.W.GANNON, 4th/7th NZMR NZ$1,750.00

PAIR - QUEEN’S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1899-1902 with clasps CAPE COLONY, RHODESIA, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL (Cpl. 4th Contingent), KING’S SOUTH AFRICA with clasps SA1901 & SA1902 (Serjt. 7th Contingent) named to: 1518 CPL A. TE. W. GANNON NEW ZEALAND MOUNTED RIFLES........ Gannon was attested on 14 March 1900 and was posted to the 4th NZ Contingent. He transferred to the 7th NZ Contingent whils’t serving in Africa and was discharged on 8 January 1902 with the rank of Serjeant. The Oxford Companion to NZ Military History states "Among Maori participants in the Boer War were HR Vercoe, Arthur Te wata Gannon and William Pitt". For his service in South Africa, Gannon received two pairs of medals. In the research documentation and service records, Gannon in writing to the NZ Defence Force says that when he requested bars for his South Africa medals he inadvertently received another set of medals but still no bars. He obviously ended up getting the bars, but a strange occurrence none the less ! Only 137 King’s South Africa medals issued to the New Zealand M.R......... In 1915 Gannon enlisted with the NZ Maori Pioneer Battalion. He was initially given the number 16/1303, but this was later changed to 33003. He quickly rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant and embarked for England with the 13th Reinforcements on 19 January 1917. He served on the Western Front and before the war ended, was promoted to Lieutenant. He returned to New Zealand on 4 May 1919 and relinquished his commission on 20 September 1920. Very Fine condition.
