King George VI obvarse (Type 1) – SGT. E.RIDDELL, 1ST. FLD. BTY. N.Z.A. (Eric Andrew Riddell, born 30/11/1911, meter reader at for the Auckland Gas Company, served as a Sergeant for 13 years with the 1st battery, Field Artillery (Territorial) and awarded the Efficiency Medal in 1939, commenced service with the 2NZEF as 1722 Bombadier on 4 October 1939, posted to Egypt 12/2/1940, joined Lustre Force (Greece) in March 1941 while serving with 2nd NZ Divisional Artillery, 4th Field Regiment, 25th Field Battery, reported missing in action 24 May 1941, later confirmed as Prisoner of War from18 May 1941, Stalag XVIII-A, died whilst POW from “Strangulation of the Bowel” 19/7/1942. Mother sent 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, War Medal 1939-45 & NZ War Service Medal on 14/3/1950. She refused to claim the Memorial Cross in a letter dated 10/8/1948, so the medal was never issued. Riddell was not married).
