George Henry Austin, born Melbourne, Victoria 22 May 1921, enlisted Port Melbourne 25 June 1942, posted to M Australia Special Unit, discharged 27 November 1945. The unit was formed in 1943 as a successor to the Coast Watchers. Their role was to gather intelligence on Japanese shipping and troop movements. They were part of the Services Reconnaissance Department, a joint Australian, New Zealand, Dutch and British military intelligence unit that saw action in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands between 1943 and 1945 against the Empire of Japan. There were approximately 400 men in the Unit, which was disbanded on 10 November 1945. Extra Fine condition.
